AMSTERDAM - Former Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm threatened to withdraw financial contributions to Amsterdam when it appeared that Amsterdam would not participate in the IPO of Schiphol, says the Amsterdam alderman Lodewijk Asscher. The alderman of the capital said that in an interview with the Volkskrant, that the newspaper published Saturday.
Asscher told that the minister, and with him a number of executives from industry, did put pressure on him.

Asscher describes in the interview how he as a starting alderman of economic affairs and finance had to tell the minister that Amsterdam would withdraw its support from the Schiphol IPO. The alderman called Zalm in the interview "intelligent, persistent and savvy".
According to Asscher he became acquainted with the "old boys network". Jan Kalff, chairman of the Supervisory Board of Schiphol and former chief executive at ABN Amro, was furious, Asscher said in the interview.
Disgraceful
"Mister Asscher, I have been 27 years in business and I have never seen anything as shameful as this. You have no idea what damage you are doing to the Schiphol Company", Asscher remembers Kalff saying. Asscher was also called by the CEO of ABN Amro Rijkman Groenink.
Asscher has nothing good to say about the "old boys network" that he considered to be the people running the affairs in The Netherlands. "The contempt and the underestimation of politics that radiates from the network I found shocking", says Asscher.
Risk
According to the alderman the considerations for the IPO of Schiphol were blurred, because both political capital as well as 'real' capital did go into it. "It is a risk when networks are so closely intertwined. I was shocked. I became even more left-wing because of this", said the alderman.
He was also impressed by his first encounter with Zalm, which was his "baptism by fire". "More uncertain whether I could do it, being an alderman of Amsterdam, I never have felt afterwards", admitted Asscher.

'Zalm zette Amsterdam onder druk'
AMSTERDAM - Voormalig minister Gerrit Zalm van Financiën dreigde financiële bijdrages aan Amsterdam in te trekken, toen bleek dat de hoofdstad niet wilde meewerken aan de beursgang van Schiphol. Dat zegt de Amsterdamse wethouder Lodewijk Asscher. De wethouder van de hoofdstad stelde dat in een interview met de Volkskrant, dat het dagblad zaterdag heeft gepubliceerd.
Volgens Asscher voerde de minister, en met hem een aantal topmannen uit het bedrijfsleven, grote druk op hem uit.

Asscher beschrijft in het interview hoe hij als beginnend wethouder van onder meer economische zaken en financiën aan de minister moest meedelen dat Amsterdam de steun aan de beursgang van Schiphol zou intrekken. De wethouder noemt Zalm in het interview ''intelligent, volhardend en gewiekst''.
Asscher maakte naar eigen zeggen toen ook kennis met het 'old boys network'. Jan Kalff, voorzitter van de raad van commissarissen van Schiphol en voormalig topman bij ABN Amro, was woest, zegt Asscher in het interview.
Schandelijk
''Meneer Asscher, ik heb in 27 jaar bedrijfsleven nog nooit zoiets schandelijks meegemaakt. U hebt geen idee wat voor schade u aanricht bij het bedrijf Schiphol'', zo herinnert Asscher zich het telefoongesprek met Kalff. Ook werd Asscher opgebeld door toenmalig ABN Amro directeur Rijkman Groenink.
Asscher heeft in het interview geen goed woord over voor het netwerk dat volgens hem de dienst uitmaakt. ''De minachting en de onderschatting van de politiek die dat netwerk uitstraalt, vond ik schokkend'', zegt Asscher.
Risico
Volgens de wethouder zijn de afwegingen voor de beursgang van Schiphol vertroebeld, omdat er zowel politiek kapitaal als 'echt' kapitaal in zit. ''Het is een risico als die netwerken zo nauw zijn verweven. Daar ben ik van geschrokken. Ik ben er linkser van geworden'', aldus de wethouder.
Onder de indruk was hij ook, door zijn eerste ontmoeting met Zalm, van zijn ''vuurdoop''. ''Onzekerder of ik het wel kon, wethouder zijn van Amsterdam, heb ik me daarna niet meer gevoeld'', bekent Asscher.
